Dressing My Post-Baby Body: eShakti to the Rescue

(I received free product from eShakti in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own).

Having a baby does a number on your body. A totally worth it number, but a number nonetheless. My hips are bigger, but my waist is actually smaller. Then throw nursing into the mix, and shopping becomes a total nightmare. Most things in my closet are either too big or too small, or they fit in some areas and don't in others.

I've figured out a few things over the last couple of months that have helped me feel a little more comfortable dressing my after-baby body.

Accept Your New Body and Love What It Accomplished
This was the first big step for me. I had to decide that I love my body. It housed another human being for 9 months, providing her with every single thing she needed. Then it brought said human into the world. I don't care what anyone says. Yes, it happens all the time, but birth is an absolute miracle. If that wasn't enough, my body has provided milk for this little human for 11 months now. I think I have a right to love my body.

Don't Be Afraid to Try New Things
As your body adjusts after baby, your style will probably have to adjust too. Embrace the change and go shopping! Brad literally had to force me to spend money on some new clothes and I'm so glad I did. Personally, I think just having some new clothes makes you feel a little better about your post-baby body.

Even if my clothes don't fit quite the way I like, I always feel better with a pair of earrings. And a bonus... they always fit! Find something you love and rock it. I also personally feel better about what I'm wearing if I at least have a swipe of mascara and a stitch of blush. But that's just me.

Layers and Flowy Pieces are Your Friends
A sweater seems to solve many of my problems these days including flappy arms and the little extra pudge around my stomach. Flowy tops are also the bees knees. Choose items that flow away from your mid section for the first few months postpartum. And lucky for us, flowy tops are in. Score!

Let's be real... my body is not exactly off-the-rack perfection right now. Like I mentioned earlier, my proportions are way off. So if it fits around my waist, it's way too tight on my hips. If it fits on my hips, the waist has a ton of left over fabric. It's a problem, especially for dresses. That's why tailoring is such a great option for me right now. I know that I'm not going to find a dress off the rack that fits just right, and I need a little extra help in the tailoring department.

Now, tailoring isn't exactly easy, convenient, or cheap... So you can imagine my excitement when eShakti reached out to me and offered me a free customized dress in exchange for my honest review!

For those who have never heard of eShakti, it is an amazing company that offers beautifully fitting fashion for all body types. They offer sizes 0-36W and custom clothing. It is less than an additional $10 to customize your dress, and I absolutely recommend doing so to get exactly what you are hoping for, especially for you fellow new moms out there who find yourself in my boat. Customizeable options range from personalized measurements to sleeve type, to dress length, which I was very happy to see as I strive for modesty in my dress... something that is often difficult to find when it comes to off the rack clothing.

I had a really hard time choosing a dress! I looked at this banded striped skirt for a long time, but decided that I can usually find skirts that fit pretty easily, so I wanted a dress. The Isabel dress probably tempted me the longest, but I eventually decided it was too similar to a dress I already have. I also thought this tie neck knit dress was beyond adorable, but knits are a little too form fitting on this post-baby body of mine.

Finally, I settled on the vintage cotton poplin dress. I loved the neck line and the vintage feel. It was a huge plus for me that the dress flowed out from the lower abs. And the dress was unique and classic at the same time. There were a few things that I didn't love about the picture, but I was able to customize it to my liking. First, I chose a full puff sleeve rather than a cap sleeve. (No one wants to see my post baby wings flapping in the wind). Also, I like my dresses to be at least knee length. I debated for a long time over choosing the knee length option or the calf length, and finally settled on knee length. I felt like that would be best for the style to maintain the vintage look.

Then came the measurements for the customized size. Boy, was I glad to be able to customize my size when I saw that my measurements spanned sizes 4, 6, and 8. I mean, it's no wonder I can't find clothes that fit this post baby body of mine! So I happily plugged in my measurements. It felt good to know that this dress would be made just for my body.

I submitted my sample order and excitedly awaited the arrival of my dress! I was told to expect about a three week turn around. Imagine my surprise when the dress arrived in just under two weeks! It even arrived before the email confirmation that it had shipped. I'm still not sure how that happened, but I am so glad that it did.

I was literally giddy when I saw the package on my doorstep. As I opened it, I was a little bit nervous. What if I had measured wrong? What if I couldn't even zip it up? What if it was too short? Too long? Would I like the sleeves?

Let's also just state the obvious here... I am incredibly awkward in pictures... especially by myself. If you're looking for those great pictures where the girls have a cute bag or clutch to complete the outfit and look like they aren't even trying to be perfect... go find yourself a fashion blog. This one's for my fellow mommas!
Should have grabbed my diaper bag or something...

I loved my first look at the dress. It was exactly what I had hopped in would be! As I tried it on, I had to hold my breath. Generally speaking, I don't trust online shopping. I want to be able to try my clothes on and know exactly what I'm getting into before committing to a new piece of clothing. But as I zipped the dress up and turned to the mirror, I was happily surprised with the final outcome. The fit was stellar. I haven't owned a dress that fit this well since about a year before getting pregnant.

It felt so good to not see extra fabric bulging out from different places or to feel like the dress was so tight that I couldn't even breathe. The length is perfect as well. Long enough to keep me comfortable but not so long that it takes away from the vintage feel. And I adore the collar. I was wanting something that was different than anything I have, and the collar didn't disappoint!

My one wish is that I had chosen regular full sleeves, rather than the puffed sleeve, but that was my mistake in choice. It doesn't look bad, and they're growing on me, but I think it would have flowed better with a regular sleeve.

And can we please talk about the fact that all of the eShakti dresses come with pockets? I adore pockets and I think every dress should have them. Serious perfection. Not a pocket person? No problem. eShakti will remove them for no additional cost! I read some reviews that the pockets were bulky and awkard, but mine are not. I actually totally forgot about them and had to take a quick inside picture so that you could get the idea. They are well hidden so no one will even know that they are there, but ever so convenient!

My only complaint about the dress is that it is a total beast to iron! That has nothing to do with the company, of course. I knew the cotton fabric would need ironing and the style is just a tricky one to work with. So I knew what I would be dealing with when I made my choice.

In the end, I will absolutely be ordering from eShakti again. They are the perfect company for new moms who are trying to figure out how to dress their after baby bodies! And really, they are great for all women of all sizes and styles.

    1. Thank you so much! And I totally understand how you feel... I have a couple of things from eShakti that I would love right now but I better wait til my pocket book agrees.

  5. This looks awesome! I totally understand the post-baby shopping problem: 1) I'm 3 different sizes too, so if it fits right in one place, it's too big/small in others, 2) can you say nursing-friendly? And 3) It's much more fun to spend money on baby clothes, and less stressful! But it's much easier to feel comfortable in your changed body when you have clothes that fit well and make you feel confident. I love the customizable option--I hope they have options for making something nursing friendly, because that's huge!

    1. Nursing friendly clothes are SO hard to find! This dress definitely isn't nursing friendly, but I knew that going in. I know I won't be able to wear it too frequently for another month or so, but I just loved it! I will definitely have to look in to whether or not eShakti has nursing friendly clothes.

  7. Great post Kailei! I'd been looking forward to this one because I loved working with eShakti myself. I really want to order more things from them. I love the dress you picked out! It looks great on you!

    1. Thank you, Justine! I loved my eShakti experience and will definitely be ordering more from them too. And I loved your cute red dress!

  8. You look amazing and I eShakti! I spilled red wine on the dress I got from them over the holidays and I'm still sad about it.

  9. Women's body after the post-baby changes considerably. So wearing the old clothes to buying new post-baby clothes is a cumbersome process. The new mothers look for the brand, comfort, size, price everything. And it's quite a difficult thing for them to go to the supermarket and get one. After the baby born, mothers need to take rest as per the doctor's recommendation. Else, problems may arise in their body. However, for the nursing purpose and other things shopping clothes from reliable online places are appreciated. And they should have different customizing options in their list.
